Medicaid: This is a federal and state program usually operated by the state health departments within the guidelines issued by HCFA. Medicaid is based solely on a person’s need and income, and furnishes at least six basic services:

•inpatient hospital care

•outpatient hospital care

•physicians’ services

•skilled nursing home services for adults

•home health care

•laboratory and radiology services

Patient classifications that are not covered by normal health insurance:

Intermediate care: No medical necessity but still requiring attention of a RN or LPN nurse (for example, a diabetes patient requiring dressing changes or insulin treatments).

Custodial care: Includes any assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as eating, drinking, toileting, bathing, ambulating, or transferring to and from bed.
